The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania

At present, the state archival system consists of the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania and 15 state archives with 10 county archives among them.

The main objectives of archives are to accumulate and preserve permanent retention documents of the National Documentary Fond as well as ensure public access to the preserved documents. The documents of the 15th-21st centuries preserved in repositories of archives occupy more than 106 km of shelves. As of the 1st of January 2012, the National Documentary Fond preserved in state archives consists of: 9 938 224 written documents, 8674 film documents, 3144 video documents, 387 561 photo documents and 20 999 audio documents.

As part of its activities concerning digitization of documents of the historical heritage of Lithuania preserved in state archives, the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania together with the Lithuanian Central State Archive and Lithuanian State Historical Archive participates in the APEX (Archives Portal Europe Network of eXcellence) project performed by archival institutions of the member states of the European Union. It is expected that during this project around 20 000 digital images of documents preserved in state archives will be provided to the Europeana portal for public access. Archives of Lithuania have been participating in other projects as well. The following projects are performed together with the Office of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania: "Historical Heritage of the Lithuanian Statehood Online"; "Lithuanian Documentary Cinema Online" ("e-kinas"); the European Film Gateway (EFG), a joint project together with the Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes Against the Polish Nation of the Institute of National Remembrance (Poland); and "Development of the Virtual Electronic Heritage System".

During the participation in the project "Development of the Virtual Electronic Heritage System" since 2011, 519 digital files of the Roman Catholic Church funds preserved in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive have been delivered onto the portal www.epaveldas.lt (76 052 digital images). At present visitors to portal are able to get acquainted with almost 2500 parish registers (456 260 digital images). Digitization of these registers will be continued after the project's accomplishment.
