Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania

   The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania was founded in 1919. It is the principal public and research library of Lithuania, also operating as a parliamentary library. The National Library functions as:

•  a state multipurpose repository of Lithuanian, Lituanica and foreign documents;
•  the national archival fund of published documents;
•  the national bibliography centre;
•  the centre for statistical accounting of documents published in Lithuania;
•  the centre for assigning and registration of international standard numbers;
•  the information centre for social sciences and humanities, politics, economy and culture;
•  the coordinating centre for research and methodological activities of Lithuanian libraries;
•  the centre of the Lithuanian Integrated Library Information System (LIBIS);
•  a deposit library of the European Union, the World Bank and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Library's mission is to support the information needs of the Lithuanian knowledge society.

Goals

•  collecting and preserving Lithuanian and Lithuania related documentary cultural heritage for generations to come;
•  ensuring its access for users from Lithuania and abroad;
•  take active participation in the creation of the knowledge society by the use of modern information technologies;
•  enchancing its activities and services towards supporting continuous learning and improvement of Lithuanian people;
•  providing methodological support for Lithuanian libraries;
•  carrying out research in the fields of book science, bibliography, information science and book science;
•  evolving library science theory and practice with the aim to accelerate integration into the world's library science processes.
