Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library of Panevėžys County

    Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library of Panevėžys County  was founded in 1922. It is the principal library in the Northeast of Lithuania. It is a modern library having the largest universal collection of documents within the region and the largest organizer of various cultural events. It is also a centre of library research, coordination, methodical assistance, interlibrary lending service, bibliography, local studies and information for the libraries in the Panevėžys and Utena Regions .

  The Library holds a universal collection of 500 000 items of documents. The most valuable part of it is the written heritage of Panevėžys Region, private collections of well-known public and cultural figures of the region. Since 1998, the Library has been organizing scientific conferences devoted to the study and dissemination of the written cultural heritage of Panevėžys Region. There were 11 conferences organized so far and their materials published.

  There are two cultural heritage centres operating within the Library: the Juozas Miltinis Heritage Study Centre and Juozas Urbšys Social Thinking and Culture Centre. They unite the intellectual community and foster patriotic education and cultural development of the children and youth .

  Since 2010, the Library has been participating in the  project „Development of the Virtual Electronic Heritage System" (VEPS). During the period of the project's implementation, the Library will digitize and present within the cultural heritage data bank and portal www.epaveldas.lt 2110 objects of documentary cultural heritage containing publications printed in Panevėžys and Biržai printing houses in the first half of the 20th century and also manuscripts, photographs and exlibris from private collections of the Library.
